Palliative Care FAQs

Q: What is palliative care?
A: Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stresses of a serious illness--whatever the diagnosis. Care is delivered through members of our palliative care team, which can include a nurse, social worker, chaplain and physician. Palliative care also addresses the emotional, social, practical and spiritual needs that result from illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.

Q: How do I get palliative care?
A: A free consultation can be arranged by asking your physician. You can also ask your nurse or a social worker who will ask your physician to request a consultation.

Q: Do I have to change doctors?
A: No. the Palliative Care team works with your primary care or attending physician.

Q: Do only certain illnesses qualify for palliative care?
A: Palliative Care provides supportive care for any one at any age with an advanced medical illness.

Q: Do I need to get authorization from my insurance to receive palliative care?
A: No. Palliative care is a free service offered here at Parkview Hospital.

Q: Can I continue to receive treatment for my illness?
A: Palliative care is appropriate at any stage in your illness and can be provided at the same time as treatment.
