What is Your BMI?

A body mass index (BMI) is used to calculate whether you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery. It is a calculation based on your weight and height. A BMI of 18.5- 24.9 is considered normal, 25-30 overweight, and 30-40 obese. Individuals with a BMI over 40 are considered morbidly obese. Patients who have a BMI of 35 or greater may be candidates for surgical treatment.

For adults 20 years old and older, BMI is interpreted using standard weight status categories. These categories are the same for men and women of all body types and ages. To use this calculator, enter your height and weight and click the "Calculate" button.

These are some of the leading causes of preventable death. Other health risks include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, sleep apnea, and depression.

The standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are shown in the following table.
