Say NO to Tobacco This May 31

On May 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) is encouraging everyone to participate in the annual celebration of World Tobacco Day. The campaign, which started in 1987, aims to draw attention to the tobacco epidemic that has been plaguing the globe and causing millions of preventable deaths and diseases. It also highlights the different efforts of WHO and other health organizations in the fight against the use of tobacco.

Through the years, the campaign has evolved from focusing on the individual level to involving national leaders and civil society. This 2017, the theme for the campaign is "Tobacco--a threat to development", which exposes the threat of the tobacco industry to the development of all countries, especially when it comes to the health and economic well-being of their people.

How You Can Participate

If you are interested in becoming a part of this campaign, the most important thing that you can do is to quit smoking for good and committing to never support tobacco companies including their products and other organizations connected to them. You may also want to encourage your family and friends to join you in participating in the campaign. WHO has provided several literature and campaign materials online that can help you start the conversation about the benefits of having a tobacco-free world.

Free Tobacco Cessation Program

Quitting tobacco is not easy. This is a fact. That's why if you have decided to kick the smoking habit for good, Anaheim Regional Medical Center is offering a free tobacco cessation program. The program is designed to help individuals become tobacco free by addressing issues such as identifying triggers, developing coping skills, making lifestyle changes, creating a support system, preventing a relapse, and more. Participants will be provided with a five-week cessation class series as well as single meeting education seminar, individual counseling sessions, and support group.
